All of Key Stage 2 came together to create a wonderful Christmas concert. The children have certainly enjoyed a morning of Christmas crafts. In maths, we have been on quite a journey learning about fractions over the last month. I often told the children that fractions is my favourite maths. It is just so exciting to see how the children learn so many skills over the unit of work, that always come back to what we learnt in the first 2 or 3 lessons! We began by exploring what the children already knew and some of the vocabulary around a fraction - in particular the denominator (bottom number), numerator (top number) and the vinculum (the line between). The children then learnt about equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers and how to convert them. They have compared and ordered fractions, added and subtracted. They have also learnt what to do when the denominators are different and used this to add, subtract, deal with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Not only this, they have learnt to go back to those early lessons and simplify the fractions in their final answers, using the learning from lesson 2 and 3! Here are some photos of some of the work. After Christmas we will begin learning about multiplication and division using the formal methods. The children have used the concentration, creativity, independence and perseverance gems. In DT the children have been recapping on some learning of circuits in Year 4. They have learnt that they have to create a closed circuit by using component parts such as a motor, a motor holder, wires, crocodile clips, batteries and battery holders. Today, they explored how to create a closed circuit and make a fan. They explored different types of fans, from size, shape, type of material, such as paper and card. The children very much enjoyed making their fans work, taking everything apart and then problem-solving to get it to work again. We will be making our own switches in the next lesson. The children have used the adventurous gems today.  We have completed our geography unit where the children have learned where the UK is and the other names, such as the British Isles, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. The children have then discovered where in the UK they live. Then, the children learnt about the redevelopment of Stratford in London and how the Olympic Games were held there and how the development is sustainable. Then, we explored the bombing of Coventry in World War II and the rapid regeneration that happened in Coventry as a result of this. The next lesson we had a visit from our historian and explored maps and Trimley in the past. Finally, we looked at how Trimley is going to change in the future, with us expecting a new school to be built in the near future. We finished with the children creating artwork of Trimley in the past, present and future. Most of the children focused on the changes to our school - which of course they can relate to the most.
