In Art we have been learning about the work of the architect Norman Foster. He designed some famous structures including: the Gherkin and the Millennium Bridge in London; the Willis Faber building in Ipswich Stansted Airport and the Sainsbury Centre. Watch out for the gems 💎 coming to our classroom next week! I’ve just finished this display ready to bring to school tomorrow. Each gem represents a way of learning (co-operation, reflection, independence, perseverance, concentration, creativity, adventurous) and I’ve used examples from Seesaw to show how you have been using the learning gems 💎 in class. So next time you upload something try and link it to a Learning Gem and your work could be put on the display.
Over the last few days we have been putting ourselves in the shoes of the South African ANC members during the time of apartheid and writing protest speeches. Our mission was to persuade ordinary South Africans to support the anti-apartheid movement and help abolish segregation. We have worked hard to include a range of Literary devices to persuade the listener including: emotive language; weasel words; dare to disagree expressions; rhetorical questions; short and snappy phrases as well as longer complex sentences. It was great fun to stand up on our chairs and read our speeches to each other. Everyone really got involved, giving an emotive speeches. Well done!
It's a Happy New Year in Mandela Class. The children came back to school so keen to talk about the books they have read in the holidays! We spent time discussing and recommending books to each other, it's been great to see everyone swapping books and encouraging each other. Today everyone took home their reading record, as we are trying to make sure everyone reads at least 5 times a week. Parents can help by making sure they sign it each time they read and remind them to hand it in on Monday mornings. Today was Mrs Matthews' Reading Raffle assembly, there are many books to win, if you read 5 times a week! Our Y6 winner was very pleased with her choice.
Our current Science topic is 'Staying Alive'. Today we measured our lung capacity: using a 5 litre water bottle and pipe, we filled our lungs full of air and blew out, using water displacement to work out in cm3 how much air we could hold in our lungs. It was fun, but very wet!! We discovered that Evie had the largest lung capacity - 18cm3 and Shannon the smallest - 8cm3. The average lung capacity was 11cm3
