After the Easter Holidays and our 10 for 10 Challenge, SATs revision officially started in Mandela class. We have been revising lots of different areas of the curriculum to prepare us for the SATs in May. Not only have we been learning new skills and techniques to help us, but we have also been teaching and passing our knowledge on to others. It has been fantastic to see so many of the learning gems in action.

We have been studying Evolution. Today in Science we were learning about Mary Anning, a palaeontologist who was born in the late 1700s and was a fossil hunter. She discovered many different fossils, including dinosaur bones.
Our task was to excavate fossils (choc chips) from the ground (cookie) without damaging it. We had a competition to see who was the best cookie palaeontologist. We each started with £10: Profit - £10 per fossil (chic chip) Losses - £3 per tool (toothpick) £8 per broken fossil (broken choc chip) £6 per piece of damaged ground (broken pieces of cookie) The person who made the most money was the winner! Alex won - making £417! We had a lovely surprise visit from some Y3 this afternoon (which was a welcome break from revision). They performed some of their poetry for us to listen to, as they have heard so much about all the hard-work we put into learning poems off by heart in Y6. It was linked to their Literacy and History topic on the Egyptians and is called 'Melvin the Mummy' by Kenn Nesbit. They performed it so well, we were all really impressed! Melvin the Mummy Melvin the mummy, who lived near the Nile, had worked as a mummy for more than a while, for mummies can go their entire careers without a vacation for thousands of years. He guarded the pyramids day after day to frighten the burglars and bandits away, which meant, as he stood watching over the pharaohs, he often got shot at with bullets and arrows. His job was so stressful, the pay was so poor, but, still, Melvin stayed and protected the door. Until he got sick of his sad situation and knew that he needed to take a vacation. His crypt was so dark and so cold and so clammy, he packed up his swimsuit and flew to Miami. He thought he would stay there for just a few days, enjoying the beach and absorbing some rays. But, sadly, poor Melvin would never return, and this is a lesson all mummies should learn: Don’t take any trips or, like Melvin, you’ll find vacations make mummies relax and unwind. Kenn Nesbitt Today was Mrs Matthews' Reading Raffle assembly - there are many books to win, if you read 5 times a week! Our Y6 winner was very pleased with her choice.
Over the Easter Holidays we heard that, out of the thousands of schools who entered the Bananagrams Competition, we have won the best decorated classroom! Today we received our prizes in the post - several Bananagram games and goodies for us to play with. Well done!
