TRIMLEY ST MARTIN PRIMARY SCHOOL |
Each week, whilst half the class are learning guitars with Mr Butcher, the other half are completing STEM activities. This week, as we have been looking at light and shadows in science, the children were tasked with creating their own art work using shadows. First we looked at some work created by Vincent Bal, (a shadowologist) before creating our own. There was lots of creative thought going on throughout the lesson, working out what the shadows of the objects reminded them of. I'm really looking forward to seeing what next week's group comes up with too! Great use of these learning gems:

We started a new topic in French at the beginning of this half term. So far we have learnt about the names of rooms in a house and ways they can be described using colours and sizes. Below, you can listen to some of us practising speaking these words and phrases in French. This week, one of the task was to practise writing sentences in French, we used an activity called Writing by Numbers to do this. The children were given some numbers, each of which matched to a different word. They simply had to work out which words they needed to complete the sentences. The children were very quick to identify what they needed and also good at spelling the words correctly as they wrote them down!
We have started a new story writing unit based on images and short films. We have been learning about DADWAVERS! to help us improve our descriptive writing. DADWAVERS! is an acronym which helps us to improve the quality of our narrative writing by starting our sentences in different ways.
PlanningWe will be using this technique to help us write about other images and short films. Watch this space for more high quality writing. Good use of these LEARNING Gems:This week in science we made periscopes and then tested them out! We then explained how a periscope worked, allowing us to see an object even when we aren't directly looking at it. Whilst some children were making their periscopes, others were carrying out their own investigations. Most children chose to investigate 'Which material is most reflective?'. Below are a few of the conclusions the children made. Good use of these learing gems:The class are continuing to work hard with fractions, this week was all about multiplying and dividing them. I have been so impressed with the increased use of their maths vocabulary when explaining their working out this week and their approach to the range of methods we have been working on.
The children have been working really hard this week, on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as multiplying fractions by integers. One of the first things we did was use vocabulary bullseye to make sure we understood what some of the vocabulary we would be using over the next few weeks actually meant. When we first did this, very few children used the word integer and so it was really great to hear them all confidently using it by the end of maths lessons this week! Below is just a small sample of the brilliant work the class have produced during the week. Great use of these learning gems:This week we began our new topic all about light. The first thing we did was think about questions we wanted answering on light. Following this we thought about the types of investigations that would have to be carried out to answer our questions. We found lots of them could be answered using secondary sources (talking to experts, using books or using the internet). I have set the children a challenge to find some of the answers in their own time and am looking forward to seeing what they find. After this, we carried out a short investigation trying to prove that light appears to travel in straight lines. The children were given the equipment they needed and had to work out what they could do. I was impressed with how quickly they were able to work out how to use the equipment to show light travels in straight lines. They then wrote about what they did in their books and explained what this showed. After exploring how we see things, we then started to look at mirrors. The children started by using them to reflect and write messages before they worked in small groups to see if they could get light rays to reflect off a mirror to change the direction of them. A great start to our new topic!
