During the maths lessons this week we have been working on multiplying and dividing fractions. First the children worked on multiplying fractions by integers and then they looked at multiplying fractions by fractions. After drawing these multiplication problems out, they quickly realised that all they needed to do was multiply the numerators together and then multiply the denominators. They then completed their independent work including putting together a multiplication jigsaw. We then looked at dividing fractions by integers, relating this to the multiplication work we had done before. good use of these learning gems:To end our textile unit we have created some fantastic textile batik wall hangings. We designed them using a Christmas Theme and applied melted wax to the fabric and then used fabric ink to colour them. We are pleased with the results. OUR FINISHED WORK:Good use of these Learning Gems:Today saw the second six children perform their poems to the rest of the class. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. This group did particularly well as they also performed their poems at the KS2 Christmas Carol Service. Good use of these Learning Gems:In Design Technology this term we have been designing and making our own bags. It's been top secret however as they are Christmas presents for our friends and family. We wrapped them in paper and placed them under our DT tree. We are really pleased with the results.
Good use of these Learning Gems:We took part in a countrywide Santa Dash this afternoon, as part of the School Games Partnership. Despite the cold, the children ran, walked or passed a football around the filed for 10 minutes, with a smile on most faces! good use of this learning gem:Today we completed the first of 2 fraction topics by looking at solving subtractions involving mixed numbers. Once again, the children made great use of their understanding of how to make equivalent fractions and how to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions to be able to do this. Lots made good use of their detectives books to help them use the method to start with, before growing in confidence and being able to do it from memory. good use of these learning gems:Today we were able to put together our finished patchwork quilt, made up of a variety of dip dyed fabric squares, with a design produced with permanent fabric markers and enhanced with stitching detail. After dyeing our fabric squares, we added a design with fabric pens and then enhanced our work with stitching details. OUR INDIVIDUAL FINISHED SQUARESGood use of these Learning Gems:We continued with our fraction work this week. We started by reminding ourselves how to find equivalent fractions and simplify fractions; two children became teachers for a short time and came up to the board to go through an example of each of them. They did a brilliant job, asking for other children's contributions and demonstrating a great understanding of the methods. We then moved on to comparing and ordering fractions by finding equivalent fractions. Finally, we looked at adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators as well as adding mixed numbers. They were shown 2 different methods for adding mixed numbers and, although they preferred the first method, they were also able to use the second method! Great use of these learning gems: |
