We spoke about all the different vegetables Oliver had grown and then made some of those vegetables out of clay. We made pumpkins, carrots and peas. We thought about their unique shapes, textures and different parts and used both our hand and some tools to mould the clay…with some great results!

We had some fun in our maths lesson today. Linked to our current unit of Addition and Subtraction, we had another carousel of activities in the classroom.
The activities were.... 1. Dice – In pairs, children rolled a die each. They then wrote the numbers they had rolled down as an addition sum and worked out the answer together. 2. Estimation – The children closed their eyes and picked up a handful of counters. They then opened their hand and estimated how many counters they think that they had picked up. Next, they counted out how many counters they had to see if their estimation was close to the total. 3. Number Bingo – The children each had a bingo board. One person on the table then read out simple addition and subtraction problems. The children playing would then check if they had the answer on their bingo board and if they did, cover it with a counter. The first to cover all their numbers was the winner. 4. Number cards – Number cards were placed face down on the table. In pairs, the children would turn over a card each and write the 2 numbers down as an addition or subtraction problem and work the answer out together. 5. Twister & Fly swats – An adult called out an addition or subtraction number problem. The children had to look at the numbered post-it notes that had been placed on the twister circles to find the correct answer. Once they had found the answer, they would then ‘swat’ it with their fly swat. Great addition and subtraction work Year 2! In our Science lesson today, we had a go at guessing what different materials were.
We had a big bag which Mrs Tubby put a different object in, each time we had to close our eyes and have a good feel of the object in the bag. We used our science vocabulary to describe what the object felt like and in some cases - sounded like! Once we had shared and discussed what the object felt like and what we thought it could be....the object was revealed. In many of the cases our guesses were correct! We then discussed and wrote down some of the ways in which we use the object. The objects that we felt were.... Bubble wrap, cotton wool, a paper plate, a spoon and a towel. Super science vocabulary Year 2! In our Art lesson this afternoon, we were experimenting with clay! We watched a video of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' in which the Caterpillar, food and objects were all made with clay and put into an animation.
We then had a go at making our own Caterpillars out of clay. We had to split our clay into 7 pieces, making them all into sphere shapes by rubbing the clay in between the palms of our hands in a circular motion. We made the head a slightly bigger sphere shape and then joined them altogether to make our Caterpillars - not forgetting to give them a smiley face! We had lots of fun and we thought that the clay was rather cold, sticky and slimy! Great creative skills Year 2! During our PSHE lesson today, we were learning about Responsibility. We had some pictures to look at in our table groups and we had to talk about the ways in which the people in the pictures were being responsible.
We also had a discussion about what it means to be responsible and the different ways in which we show this in our lives. We had a great time on our material walk this afternoon - spotting many different objects and working out what materials they were made from.
The children were extremely well behaved! Thank you to those parents that were able to accompany us - encouraging and supporting the children and being great lollipop ladies and men! Thank you so much! In our science today we continued with our learning about materials.
We were experimenting with cotton wool. We firstly had to hold our hand out and close our eyes whilst Mrs Tubby placed a cotton wool ball in our hand. We had to guess what the object was by feeling it. We had lots of great adjectives to describe it! We wanted to carry out an investigation to see if cotton wool was waterproof or not. We had a plastic cup and had to see how many dry cotton wool balls would fit inside. We then filled out cups with some water and put the cotton wool balls back in the cup. The water disappeared…..but we soon worked out that the cotton wool balls had absorbed all the water. Phoebe was even able to tip the plastic cup upside down and no water or cotton wool balls fell out! The wet cotton wool had moulded into the cups shape. The result of our investigation was….No, cotton wool is NOT waterproof. We used some great scientific vocabulary and found our investigation very interesting. Super scientists!! We have reached the end of our Place Value unit in maths, so today we had some fun with what we have learnt. We played a quiz in our table teams.
We gave our ourselves team names and had colour and shape cards which we had to hold up. Each card corresponded to one of the answers. We had lots of fun and worked well in our teams to figure out the answers. Super team work and super learning Year 2! |
