Trimley St Martin Primary School has a clear and active Prevent strategy in place to safeguard pupils from radicalisation and extremism. This strategy aligns with the Government’s broader Prevent Duty, which forms part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy and aims to stop people from being drawn into terrorism.
Our Prevent approach reflects the statutory requirements set out in Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act (2015) and is informed by the DfE Prevent Duty Guidance (2023), as well as the statutory safeguarding guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018) and Keeping Children Safe in Education.
We recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation and extremism is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in keeping them safe. Our school is committed to providing a secure environment in which pupils feel safe to learn, explore ideas, and discuss sensitive issues.
Our Prevent Objectives
Trimley St Martin Primary School supports the three key objectives of the national Prevent Strategy:
To meet these objectives, the school has embedded a range of proactive measures:
Our Prevent Risk Assessment outlines how we continue to promote resilience to extremism, protect pupils from online and offline risks, and ensure appropriate intervention when concerns arise. This includes awareness of key themes such as online radicalisation, mental health vulnerabilities, fascination with violence, and exposure to conflict-related extremism.
Through these actions, Trimley St Martin Primary School remains committed to safeguarding all pupils and staff, promoting an inclusive school community, and ensuring that everyone is equipped with the knowledge and confidence to challenge extremism in all its forms.

Our Prevent Objectives
Trimley St Martin Primary School supports the three key objectives of the national Prevent Strategy:
- Respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat from those who promote it.
- Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they receive appropriate advice and support.
- Work with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation that need to be addressed.
To meet these objectives, the school has embedded a range of proactive measures:
- Promoting British Values:
British values—democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs—are promoted through our curriculum, assemblies, and everyday school life. - Challenging Extremism:
Pupils are encouraged to think critically, question information, and challenge extremist or discriminatory viewpoints. We address prejudice, racism, and intolerance in all forms. - Creating a Safe Space:
Our school provides a safe and supportive environment where children feel confident discussing sensitive or controversial topics. This helps build their understanding, resilience, and awareness of the dangers of extremism. - Staff Training and Awareness:
All staff receive regular Prevent training so they can recognise the signs of radicalisation and know how to respond appropriately. They understand how to access advice, support, and safeguarding pathways. - Safeguarding Policies:
The Prevent Duty is fully integrated into our safeguarding policies and procedures. These are reviewed annually to ensure they remain effective and reflect current local and national guidance. - Partnership Working:
The school works closely with local authorities, Suffolk Constabulary’s Prevent Team, social care, and health services to identify local risks, assess concerns, and support vulnerable individuals. - Parental Engagement:
We actively encourage parents and carers to share any concerns and to engage in open dialogue with the school about their child’s well-being, online activity, and exposure to extreme views.
