intent
Art is a key part of our broad and balanced curriculum at Trimley St. Martin Primary School. As a school we believe each child has the right to knowledge and the skills in order to access art at the highest level before the end of Key Stage 2. Children will have the confidence to be expressive and demonstrate creativity at the very best of their ability. This includes the skills to take part in many different mediums of art and developing a deep understanding of art’s role in our own culture and history.
These goals are planned for in a well-structured way through our long term plan, influenced by the Suffolk Art Scheme, building on the skills taught throughout each key stage. With set targets within each year group, children who require further extension with their artistic learning are identified and challenged to build upon their skills and likewise, those that do not achieve these expectations are supported to achieve through carefully breaking down and scaffolding the learning.
Skills of observation and evaluation are taught so that the children at Trimley St. Martin Primary School are able to master their techniques through self-improvement and motivation. We aim for all children at Trimley St. Martin Primary School to develop a life-long love of art.
Our role is to make art creative and inclusive as well as to develop the cultural capital for the children we care for.

implementation
The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. This enables links to other curriculum areas, including humanities, with children developing a considerable knowledge of individual artists as well as individual works and art movements. A similar focus on skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture.
The school’s high quality art curriculum is supported through the availability of a wide range of resources, which are used to support children’s confidence in the use of different media.
Art in the Early Years Foundation Stage
We relate the children's creative experiences to the objectives set out within the creative development in the EYFS documents, which underpin the curriculum planning for children aged birth to five. The children's learning includes art, music, dance, role-play and imaginative play. We recognise the importance of children having first hand experience and encourage them to make connections between one area of learning and another, and so extend their understanding.
We provide a rich environment in which we encourage children to explore different media and techniques within a meaningful context. Children are engaged in a wide range of activities, and their responses involve the various senses. We give them the opportunity to work alongside artists and other adults. The activities that they take part in are imaginative and enjoyable.

impact
School displays reflect the children’s sense of pride in their artwork and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum, as well as the progression of skills across the entire school. The school environment also celebrates children’s achievements in art and demonstrates the subject’s high status in the school, with outcomes, including sculptures, textiles and painting.
