In English we have been writing our own retelling of the short animation of Broken - the story of Rock, Paper and Scissors. We have been using our Vocabulary Ninja, DADWAVERS!, Show Not Tell and Sentences of 3 skills to help us retell the story in our own words. After planning, drafting in our books and typing up and editing our work we then made them into picture books, which we have illustrated beautifully. We are so pleased with the finished results! |

We have worked so hard on our 3D sculptures that we decided to turn our classroom into an Art Gallery and share our work with others. Our individual displaysGood use of these Learning Gems:Well done to all of the children who reached their AR Target this term by regularly reading at home as well as in school. 🌟 All KS2 children who have achieved their AR target will be having a treat when we return to school after Easter 🌟 For our final artist we were given the choice out of these 3 leading abstract artists to study. We looked at their sculptures and considered how we could create our own clay sculptures in their style. Our finished sculptures:For our latest task in DT the children have been asked to work in groups to create a prototype of a mechanism that will open and close a vent in a cow barn to allow air to flow through it. They were shown and practised building a cam mechanism before being given the option of using any mechanism they liked for this task. Some groups chose to use a pulley system, where as others chose a pneumatic system like they had used during one of their topics in Year 3. The children really made use of the iterative design process as they tested out their mechanism as they worked and then adapted and improved them until their mechanisms matched their design criteria more.
Great use of these learning gems:Today saw the fourth poetry recital. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks.
Over the past 2 science lessons we have been looking at adaptations in plants and animals. To start with, we explored how a cactus has adapted to its desert environment and then the children were allowed to investigate adaptations a plant they were interested in. We then looked at animals - focussing on polar bears to begin with - watching a video to explained how these bears had adapted to live in the arctic environment. Following this, the children then worked in groups to investigate an animal and the adaptations they had made in order to live in their environment.
Great use of these learning gems:We made a start on our new topic of algebra in maths today. The children quickly understood how letters can be used instead of numbers and the 3 children in the images below became the teacher to explain how they worked out these problems. good use of this learning gem:Today's science lesson was based around offspring. First we established what was meant by offspring before looking at inherited characteristics as opposed to environmental characteristics. The children then chose a Mr Man and a Little Miss character to create offspring of, explaining what features they had inherited from each parent. Following this, the children were then asked to carry out a quick investigation to find out which inherited features were common in class. They were then asked to present this data in a graph of their choosing - most chose a bar graph for the type of data they had collected but 1 child chose a pie chart!
