Welcome to the TSM Geography page.
Intent - our vision for geography at Trimley St Martin
- At Trimley St Martin The National Curriculum is used to underpin our geography planning and teaching.
- Our geography teaching and planning (shown in our progression document) allows all pupils to study a range of geographical topics.
- We believe that geography should be taught in a very thorough and progressive approach within every classroom, enabling every child to gain geographical knowledge and develop a clearer understanding of the world around them.
Implementation - geography planning and progression of skills
As well as ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.
The curriculum is taught in units (as shown in the units of work) which ensures progression through year groups and follows the National Curriculum.

How the Rising Stars scheme supports learning
- The Rising Stars Scheme provides teachers with the lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and interesting resources to support every lesson. The scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum.
- Rising Stars Geography is a complete curriculum programme for primary geography, which provides 18 half-termly units of work to ensure pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding geographical understanding.
- It provides 5 lessons focusing on a geographical strand, which is investigated and researched during each lesson. Lesson 6 allows for a Big Finish to showcase the research and knowledge gained.
- The scheme allows for many cross-curricular links and opportunities to bring geography 'alive' in the classroom.
- The Rising Stars planning supports pupils progress by embedding frameworks of content and concepts that enable the pupils to access future material. Links are made within and across units, both within the year groups and in previous year groups, to support pupils in making geographical connections.
- In line with the curriculum for geography and in conjunction with the National Geographical Association, the scheme enables pupils to have a rich and varied geographical knowledge, geographical understanding and to develop their geographical skills.
The progression of the geography curriculum is through these strands of learning:
|
Mastery in geography lessons
We follow a mastery approach to geography and we work hard to ensure geography lessons are challenging and informative in order to capture children’s interest and bring geography alive, making it real and in context. Teaching sequences follow a progression of skills. Those working towards expectations will work on the same tasks but may need greater support from using frameworks to complete the tasks. Pupils working above expectations are expected to undertake activities with greater independence and be provided with some opportunities to make choices on how they learn and communicate their knowledge. |

Geography in EYFS
In EYFS, the teachers plan Geography activities as part of 'Understanding of the world'. Children are guided to make sense of their physical world and community through a range of personal experiences and through continuous provision.

Impact
- Pupils at Trimley St Martin will have a solid understanding of location, place and human & physical geography. This is underpinned by skills and fieldwork in the local area and beyond.
- Trimley St Martin students will be equipped with the skills needed to help them understand the world around them. They will learn how to take care of our special world and know how to protect the environment.
- The children will develop a clear understanding of their environment and the careful balance it requires in order to protect it for the future, thus giving them direction and resilience in life.
- Teaching will be highly modelled and then allow children to develop knowledge through questioning, research and debating for themselves.
