This afternoon in our Art lesson we were learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy who’s work centres around all things natural. Goldsworthy takes natural materials such as leaves, stones, twigs etc and makes amazing creations and sculptures. We were in awe of some of his creations! So inspired by his work, we went out onto the field each with a ziplock bag to collect some natural items. Next week we will use these natural items to make our very own Andy Goldsworthy sculpture!

This morning in our English lesson we were learning about verbs. We learnt that are a person, place or thing and came up with some of our own examples. We then went on a ‘Noun Hunt’ around the school and wrote down some of the nouns we saw under ‘person’, ‘place’ or ‘thing’. Our last task was to then write some of the nouns we had found into sentences.
In our science lesson this afternoon, we finished one experiment and carried out another! We have been learning about Holidays and looking at the power of the sun. Last week, we left a large sheet of coloured card with some shapes lightly stuck on, in the sun to see what would happen to the colour of the card and the colour of the card under the shapes. Many of us thought that the sun would fade the colour of the card..... We slowly took some of the shapes off and there was a slight change. We noticed that underneath the shapes was the same shade of green as it started and the rest of the card was a slightly lighter shade of green. So our prediction was correct - the heat of the sun had slightly faded the coloured card. This morning we also started of a second experiment. We had been sent a postcard from Dora asking us to test bags and containers to see which would be the best for her to put her drinks in and for them to stay cold for a day at the beach. So Mrs Tubby had frozen some bottles of water overnight and bought in some bags and containers. The aim of the experiment was to see which container kept the bottle of water frozen/cold the best. We tested; a cardboard box, a material bag, a paper bag, a plastic box and a cool bag. Most of us predicted the cool bag would keep the water the coolest and a few of us predicted it would be the material bag that would be the best. We put a frozen bottle in each bag/container and left them for the day. This afternoon we took the bottles out...but when Mrs Tubby picked up the paper bag, it broke! We noticed that the paper bag and broken/ripped because the ice had melted and made the bag wet. The cardboard box was still together but wet inside, the plastic box had a small pool of water from the ice melting, the frozen bottle in the material bag still had a large chunk of ice in, but had made the bag quite wet. However, the bottle of water in the cool bag was the bottle which still had the most ice in. So our prediction was correct...it was the cool bag which is best to keep cold drinks in for a day at the beach! We spoke about the foil lining in the cool bag and how it works as an 'insulator' to keep the cold in. We then wrote our own postcards back to Dora to explain our findings and tell her we thought she should take a cool bag to the beach to keep her drinks cold! Fantastic scientific work Year ! In our science lesson this afternoon as part of our topic of 'Holidays' we discussed the importance of staying safe in the sun (the weather couldn't of been more perfect for this!) and what we can use to help us, such as sun-cream, sunglasses, sun-hats and drinking plenty of water. We also spoke about how the heat of the sun can change things over time such as the colour of clothes or furniture.
We then decided to carry out our own experiment. We got a large piece of coloured card and each cut out a shape to lightly stick on. We have pinned the large piece of coloured card up at the window to leave in the sun for the week and see what happens. In next weeks lesson, we will carefully take our shapes off and see what has happened to the colour underneath and see if the colour of the rest of the card has changed. Some of us think the main card colour will get lighter and under the shapes will still be bright. Watch this space to see if our prediction was correct!.... Did you know this week is Science week?
So today we had a whole afternoon on the subject. In our topic this term we have been learning all about different animals ad todays lesson was all about keeping our planet pollution free. First of all, in our table groups we were given a set of animals card which we had to sort in anyway we liked. Mrs Tubby was really impressed with how we worked as a team and how each table chose to sort them- The green table sorted their animals into Herbivores and Carnivores The yellow table sorted them by the colour of their fur or skin The red table and the blue table both chose to sort their animals into those that had 4 legs and those that had flippers. We learnt about how many animals, particularly those that live in our oceans can be affected by plastic pollution. We had a really interesting class discussion about the dangers of the rubbish in our oceans and what these means for the animals. We discussed how animals often mistake rubbish for food and that this can then cause the animals to sadly die. We matched animals up to the items of plastic they may often mistake for food, and then matched the animals with the food they should eat and which is safe. In particular we learnt about how turtles can get caught up in rubbish such as nets and plastic packaging and spoke about all the different rubbish they often mistake for food. We wrote these items around a picture of a turtle. To finish off the afternoon, we closed our eyes and each thought about how we could help our planet to become plastic pollution free. We each wrote our own pledge about what we will do. This afternoon, kitted out in red, white and blue and even some of our own Kings and Queens, the whole school joined together to celebrate the forthcoming King's Coronation by having a party on the field.
We had a picnic, played games and sung our coronation song which we had all been learning. The weather stayed fine (but rather windy) and lots of fun was had by all! Well done to all our Super Learning Gem winners for the Spring Term. A great achievement and well deserved!
This morning in our maths we have been measuring the length of different objects with a ruler. We measured the objects in centimeters and learnt that we can write 'cm' instead of writing centimeters every time.
We spoke about how we must make sure we are measuring from the very start of the object to the very end. Lots of great measuring Year 1! Wow! What a fun day we have had being Explorers!
Maths - We started off by thinking about and solving some number problems some of our explorers had. We used our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s to help us. PE- First of all in PE we thought the describing words used for the different movements within the story and we acted out how the characters in the book explore the long, wavy grass, the thick, oozy mud and the big, dark forest etc. Then, covering the screen, Mr Childs played some different types of music and we had to guess what sort of music it was and move to the style of it. We had forest, ocean and space music. Art - We drew some fantastic pictures of Amelia Earhart who we have been learning lots about. English - Pirate codes. In pairs, we were given a sheet with different pirate type images on - each of which represented a different letter. We were then given a separate sheet which we were told had a secret message on which would tell us where the treasure was. We had to use the pirate code to figure out the message! Thank you to all of you for making the children into fantastic explorers - they all looked brilliant and were beaming as they came in! A great day was had by all! This afternoon saw the end of our 'Treasure Island' Science unit. So we went into the hall and made desert shelters. Each group made our own shelters using material which had been placed on its own Island in the middle of the hall which could only get to by carefully stepping on the stones, so as not to be eaten by the sharks in the ocean! We then played 'Shark attack' - a bit like musical chairs but with desert Islands and children being eaten by sharks! Lots of fun was had by all!
