For Science week this week, the focus was on 'Smashing Stereotypes'. Each class chose to look at a scientist who went against what society often believes a stereotypical scientist looks like.
First of all, we spoke about what the word 'Stereotype' meant and discussed what we tend to think of when we think of the word 'Scientist'. Some of the descriptions which came up were:
*White lab coats
*Wear glasses
*Are male
*Have white skin
We then spoke about our chosen Scientist - Charles H Turner. We looked at some pictures of Charles H Turner and saw that he had black skin, did not wear glasses or a white lab coat - therefore smashing stereotypes!
We learnt about how Charles Turner looked at the behaviour of animals and in particular insects. He discovered that insects could hear and honeybees could see colour and patterns and could remember them too. He conducted many experiments to prove this.
With Charles Turner's interest in insects in mind, we made paper-chain caterpillars and bumblebee cakes.
