D.T. Practising using tools

In preparation for making the Viking Longships, the children have been learning how to use saws today. They learnt how to use the g clamps and the sawing blocks and then how to use the saws. The children then had to sand the wood down so they didn't get splinters.
The children have certainly use the adventurous gems today.

Different types of triangles

We are currently working on perimeter and today we had to work out the perimeter of polygons - of which some of the questions related to triangles and was based on a lot of assumed knowledge that the children knew the types of triangles. We began the lesson by recapping on the types of triangles. Then worked out the perimeters of the polygons. We then came back to triangles and the children recorded what they remembered about the triangles - with some impressive work from some the children.
We have used the adventurous and concentration gems today.

PSHE - keeping calm and putting someone in the recovery position.

In PSHE we have been learning that we need to keep calm if something serious happens and today have learnt how to put someone in the recovery position. The children were very sensible and discovered that this is actually quite easy to do.
We have used the cooperations gem today.

We had a fantastic play performed for us today - The Hare and the Tortoise

We had a fabulous time watching the Tortoise and the Hare this afternoon. It was funny and the Celloist was amazing.

We have started our DT project on making and designing a Viking Longship. We began lesson 1 by researching and drawing a Viking Longship.

Science and how a baby develops

In science we have carried on learning about how a baby develops in the womb. The children then created scattergraphs to show the growth in cm. Some children also did a scattergraph to show the mass of a developing baby too. The children used the creative and concentration gems today

Vikings

On Monday, we began our history topic on the Vikings. We began by looking at where the Vikings came from - Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) and that they came over to invade Lindisfarne in 793AD. We compared on a timeline how this was the same time period as the Anglo-Saxons.
We learnt about sources and that they are, books, internet, artefacts, historical documents, etc and that there are primary and secondary sources.
Today, we reminded ourselves of what sources are and and then looked at why the Vikings chose to come and invade and settle in England. We have learnt that the Vikings were more than just raiders and that they were traders and farmers.
Each lesson we are answering our topic question - would the Vikings do anything for money?
We have the creative and cooperation gems.

Playscript Writing

We are having a lot of fun with learning about playscripts.
This week the children have learnt that there are shifts in formality during the script. The scene setting is always written in a formal way and the characters vary in formality, dependent upon who they are. For example the king will be formal, whilst a peasant will not speak in a formal way. We have looked at commas to separate clauses and then today we looked at how to apply the stage directions. The children worked in small groups to complete this and then acted out their lines they had written, being sure to include how to say the lines as per the stage directions.
