We have had a brilliant afternoon in geography, with a visit from the Trimley St Martin Historian. She brought along maps that were from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century. The children explored the maps and how they changed over the centuries. For example, the houses included - only those that were owned by important people, the roads, the fields, etc. By the time we looked at a map from the 1800's it looked more like the modern-day Ordinance Survey Map.
The Historian then got the children to spot the difference in photographs of the local area, comparing images taken up to a hundred years ago, to the present day. They recorded the changes, such as houses, new developments, roads made, windmills no longer there, alterations to our school, etc.
To finish, the children explored some old maps. They had to be careful as they handled the maps, as they are very precious and old. What a super afternoon!
