In writing we have been learning about Rosalind Franklin. The children, whilst learning about this amazing, yet little-known scientist, have continued to develop their grammar skills.
The grammar they have been learning about have been chronology and associated fronted adverbials, conjunctions, past tense, present perfect and past perfect tense, relative clauses, and of course structuring of biographies and formality. The children then researched their own scientist and wrote their own biographies, with some stunning results. The children used the adventurous and independence gems. In RE this afternoon, the children have been introduced the religion Islam. The children explored the concepts of 'reveal' and 'revelation' through a number of items revealed in some boxes. The children explored the concept of the number 42 and how this number represents the ultimate question. They then considered a question that wanted answering, with them coming up with all kinds of questions about life, the universe and everything.
The lesson ended with the children creating 100 cubes. The 100 cubes all means something, and this will be 'revealed' at the end of the unit. The children used the adventurous, reflective and cooperative gems today. Today, the children enjoyed a trip to the farm shop. The children looked at where the products are imported from and that some products are from England. The children also looked at locally sourced products, such as cakes and honey and considered whether locally sourced products are better value for money.
Whilst enjoying an ice-cream outside the farm shop, we discussed local produce and how this is not farmed so intensively and the factories for making local produce are usually on a smaller scale. This makes it difficult for the products to be priced at a similar price, for example compared to a supermarket. The children were wonderfully behaved today and were so thoughtful to the staff and customers at the farm shop. We used the adventurous gems today. Wow! In art today, the children have finished their press printing and applied the blue layer to their prints. The children worked together to complete these today, as the use of the press prints repeatedly was beginning to damage them. The children then reflected on their art by explaining the steps and considering what went well and what they could have improved.
The children used the reflective, cooperation and creative gems today. Today in art, the children continued to work on their press printing. Today, the children learnt that if they press their print down, anything they choose to will remain yellow. The children then had to line up the press prints on the paper exactly to create their prints with some stunning results.
Today the children used the creative gems. Also in science today, whilst learning about friction, the children explored picking up jelly. We then coated the jelly in oil and looked at how this reduces the friction by trying to pick up the jelly again. This was quite tricky!
The children used the cooperation and adventurous gems today. In science today, the children learnt more about friction. They investigated whether different surfaces affected how steep a slop would be before a car would roll down it. The children discovered that a slope covered in foil created less friction than a slope covered in carpet.
The children used the cooperation and adventurous gems today. In art this afternoon the children learnt how to do print making. Here are some of the results of the first colour of paint.
The children used the creativity gem today. The children also created parachutes. They discovered that their parachute created air resistance, thus slowing the parachute down. The children then completed an investigation to discover what changes they could make to their parachutes to see if this affected how quickly it fell to the ground.
