After school last night 2 of our Ambassadors went along to unveiling of the plaque with the Trimley St Martin Parish Council and helped to plant a tree. This was attended by Noah and Quinn who were invited along from Year 5, and also Charlee and Edith from Year R, who happened to pass by at the same time.

In science today we looked at how materials can be filtered to separate them. Working together, they separated flour and coconut and sand and paperclips. The children investigated how different things would help them to filter the materials. Then, the children made a solution using a solvent and a solute by dissolving salt in water. The children then investigated how to filter this. They learnt that once salt is dissolved, the molecules are too small and cannot be filtered, even with filter paper. We then explored how water and salt can be separated by the process of evaporation, by heating the water until the water had turned in water vapour (gas), leaving just the salt behind. The children used the adventurous gem today.
On Monday this week we had a great morning in the wild wood making stick men with googly eyes, glazing some clay models, making dens and a few rounds of distance hide and seek (all of us hid in the wild wood and one person had to see if they could see people from a fixed position on the other side of the fence), which was very funny, especially when Mr Childs and Mrs Hammond took turns hiding in the duvet cover and the seeker thought they were one of the children hiding! We used our Adventurous Gem for these activities.
In science today we have been looking at irreversible changes. We began by looking at an egg and how this is a liquid and then cooked it and the children observed the changed state of the egg due to the chemical reaction. We then looked at corn and how the dry kernels change state as they become hot and pop into popcorn. Then, we burnt some cardboard to show the changing that burning creates. To finish, we put mentos in coke and observed the change as the CO2 combined to create many more bubbles. The children used the creative and concentration gems today.
The children had a great time today organising the Table-Top-Sale for the class. The children began by organising the items into groups and then they had a table of merchandise to prepare to sell. We also had Snowy the horse who was raffled - winner to be revealed on Monday. Thank you so much to the parents and the children for your generosity today. We raised a massive £131 pounds!
The children used the adventurous gem today. In history this term, the children have begun to learn about the Vikings. In the first lesson they learnt about the Battle of Lindisfarne. They discovered that the Vikings came over in their longboats and killed everyone in the monastery and even used the used monks as target practice!
This week, we look at sources and whether Vikings would do just anything for money. We discovered that the Vikings settled in areas that would give them things of worth to trade. The Vikings traded everything from walrus tusks, to silver and gold; to spices and silks. Using the sources, they learnt that some Vikings tended to their fields in some parts of the year, and plundered and murdered at others. So far, from what the children have learnt, the Vikings have lived up to their fearsome reputation. The children have completed their letter writing unit and have really worked hard on this. They started by picking apart a model text and learning the grammar features needed to write a letter. The children learnt about the paragraphing, use of first person, persuasive language, conjunctions, modal verbs and subjunctive form and of course the use of a formal tone. The children wrote out their letters and then today, we went into the ICT suite and they typed them up. Then, the children wrote reflections of their learning with this unit of work.
The children used the concentration, reflective and adventurous gems. We celebrated World Book Day today.
The children wore their comfy clothes for the day, as did the Head Teacher! They enjoyed sharing their favourite book with their partner. They also designed new book covers for their books, played a book bingo game and completed lots of other book orientated activities. |
