We have had such a lovely maths lesson today learning about square numbers. The children enjoyed exploring that they could use arrays of counters to create square numbers and that if they could not have an equal number of rows and columns on their arrays, then the number was not a square number. We then looked at how this is a number multiplied by itself and is denoted with the little 'floaty' 2. We explored how this is called a square number and also called to 'the power of'.
A lovely discussion then happened, where someone asked can the little 2 be a different number. The children were amazed to learn about how the 'little' number could be a 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. and how the number would keep multiplying by itself. Of course, these are then not square numbers.
