Having looked at the Back Pack situation in Year 1 and 2. I asked what the children used the (quite large) back packs for? The majority of children said they used it for maths homework, reading log and reading book. When asked if they needed a big back pack the majority said no. Some children said they put their lunch boxes in them and some said they carry their P.E kit in them. When in school, the P.E bags are stored separately and the lunch boxes are put on trolleys leaving these jumbo sized bags hanging up on pegs with virtually nothing in them.
Within school the bags take up a lot of unnecessary space and so I think we need to consider whether children should just be using standard book bags to come to school with.
I'm interested to hear your views - my view is that, in most cases, these bags are unnecessary and I don't see the need for a child to lug these bags back and forth everyday. I'd sooner see book bags used which can be stored in the classroom where they are more accessible to the children.
