Thank you teachers for competing in the mini Commonwealth Games. Well done to Mrs Ross - table tennis champion. Huge thank you to Mr Edwards who edited the video ready for our website. Here is the Commonwealth Dance with the whole school taking part, including the teachers. Fantastic!!!
In order to recognise this years Commonwealth Games in Glasgow starting Wednesday 23rd July 2014, the school had a Geography Curriculum day where the children learned about the Queen’s Commonwealth. As normal, the parents were invited to come in classes and work alongside the children as they learnt about a particular country within the commonwealth. The children learnt all about the country; its location, currency, language, traditions and its people. The children also learnt about the Commonwealth and what it actually means to be part of it. The afternoon concluded with a Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in the school playground , where each country will complete a lap of honour wearing their countries team colours and some wore traditional outfits. The Queen and Prince Phillip (a.k.a. Mrs Barrell and Mr Edwards) attended and the children stood for the National anthem. All 182 children performed a Commonwealth Games dance that was choreographed by Mr Stock & Mr Childs. The dance included a number of the sports in the Commonwealth Games as well as some Scottish 'style' dance moves. The afternoon was a great success. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support the children both in the class and during the ceremony. Below are some photos from the afternoon... more to follow, as well as some video. Following a recommendation from our Governor, Lorna Adamson, we invited in Moira Oliver to come into school and talk about the time she has spent in Africa and how she has helped improve a school based in Uganda.
The children learnt a lot about the differences between African schools and English schools and Nightingale Class learnt even more about poaching, which is the topic they are studying in class at the moment. Interestingly, they were able to name all of the African animals that were shown during the assembly - some of which I'd never heard of! At one point, Moira modelled how heavy it was to lift and carry the water that the young children are expected to do in the village she visited. She managed to find a strong child to model the process. Today was Sports Relief and the first 1,3,5mile challenge. It was also a non uniform day – pupils were invited to come to school wearing Sports wear for a donation of £1.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 were aiming to run, walk or jog 1 mile, KS2 were aiming to run 3 miles. Every single child completed at least 1 mile and 95% of Key Stage 2 completed 3 miles or more, with 10% of those running 5 miles! The majority of children ran or jogged. Parents came along to support and cheer on the runners. There was a great atmosphere. Pupils were presented with 1, 3 and 5 miles certificates. The school are extremely proud of the pupils, who were exceptional today – not just with regards to effort they put into their running but with their attitude towards the challenge and the way in which they supported each other to keep going! It's been fantastic, I am so proud of what the children achieved today. We are awaiting the return of all the sponsor forms but have already raised about £675 for good causes. Mr Stock |
