TRIMLEY ST MARTIN PRIMARY SCHOOL |
Last week we sent out information about collecting special addition lids. In order to send off for a free latest Samsung Tablet we need to collect 50 lids. We now have 1 lid... we just need another 49!
Treat yourself to a sandwich (and the neighbours) over the weekend and make sure you spread on some Flora (from a tub with the special lid!) and then send the lid into school to add to the 1 already collected! Thank you... Mr Stock A huge well done to all the children at TSM who have been working hard to learn their spelling bee words over the last few weeks.
I have been so impressed with the attitude of the children towards this. Even this morning, I had children at the gate asking me to test them on their spelling. The buzz has been amazing. I cant wait to see children use these spellings in their writing. The five finalists from each year group have been found and next week sees the live finals! Parents should have recieved letters inviting them to these finals. Its going to be great fun! Like sports day... winning is great but taking part is just as important. Well done to all who showed the TSM commitment to challenge. In order to improve our children's ability to speak in front of an audience, present their ideas, speak clearly and fluently with expression and answer questions about a topic, we have registered with the English Speaking Board to deliver an award for children that recognises these skills.
The new national curriculum places a greater focus on Spoken language and so the new curriculum and the ESB award will run side by side. The school recognises that academic ability is not the only key to success in education and into the workplace. A well rounded personality, with academic ability, who models the TSM values will hopefully be even more successful later on in life. One important skill that is often neglected is the ability to present yourself, to speak clearly and in a way that makes people take note, a way that engages others and enthuses them is also very important skill to master. That is why spoken language is featured quite strongly in the new curriculum and why we feel the ESB award will encourage children to recognise these skills as being just as important as reading, writing and maths. We will start the programme with the current Year 6 with the help of Mrs Matthews and Mr Harvey and then we intend to roll this out throughout the school. In the light of recent events in the papers regarding Snap chat we thought it would be a good idea to revisit the work we did during the last academic year to make sure that the E Safety message was being shared and applied. Each class worked on activities linked to E Safety and the work created was use to create an E Safety display.
Year 5 used the results of Mrs Campbell's internet questionnaire to present the results in bar graphs and pie charts. The results were very interesting indeed! In order to inspire children to read more at home we continue to promote reading in a number of different ways. Classes now have multiple copies (15x) of class texts so that they can read along with the class teachers. The reading scheme has been developed further in to KS2 and in assemblies each week staff are reading parts of books to help develop interest in them. The books will be added to the prize box, so if children read at home 5x week they will be in the running to win one… however, if your child is excited about a book they have been read in assembly you can get hold a copy quite easy from an online retailer, in high street shops and in some supermarkets. These weeks book shared with the children was: The Iron Man – Ted Hughes “Part modern fairy tale, part science fiction myth, The Iron Man describes the unexpected arrival in England of a mysterious giant "metal man" who wreaks havoc on the countryside by attacking the neighbouring farms and eating all their machinery. A young boy called Hogarth befriends him and he and the extraordinary being end up defending and saving the earth when it is attacked by a fearsome "space-bat-angel-dragon" from outer space. This children's classic, with its message of peace and hope, is known and loved all over the UK and is here presented as part of an exciting new collaboration between Walker Books and Faber and Faber.” ISBN 978-0571226122 Well done to those pupils who solved the coded messages hidden around the school. The code spelled out the words SPELLING BEE! And here it is... the launch of the Trimley St Martin spelling bee competition! Unfortunately due to the photocopier playing up, not all letters were sent out today. They will be sent out from school tomorrow but if you cannot wait, click on the pdf version of the letter below.
We have just received confirmation, after submitting a portfolio of evidence, that we have achieved the Sainsburys School Games SILVER kite mark!
We are now working towards the GOLD award but we are well impressed that we hurdled over the BRONZE award completely. The award recognises our commitment to sport and PE at school. As advertised in the September newsletter the school organised an opportunity for Parents to come along and learn more about E Safety / Cyberbullying and how to ensure their children's safety with new technology such as pads and iphones. The meeting / discussion was led by Mrs Campbell who oversees E Safety in the school and is ICT subject leader. Those who attended found it very useful! Parents were pleased that the school were educating the children on E Safety within the school and some were quite shocked about some of the facts shared during the meeting! If you were unable to attend a copy of the slides used are downloadable below along with some of the advice sheets handed out. Paper copies will be distributed to Year 5 & 6 in the next few days.

These weeks book shared with the children was: The Tunnel – Anthony Browne "Steeped in as much symbolism as you dare extract... A fascinating book that will afford hours of imaginative unravelling." The Guardian * "A haunting, strange story with the feel of a Brothers Grimm tale. It will say a great deal to any child with brothers or sisters, and the pictures are - naturally - quite superb."
