A massive well done to the whole of Key Stage 1 for a fantastic sports day. A special well done to the yellow team who were overall winners. Mrs Ross, Mrs Rushbrooke and Mr Childs were very impressed with the classes attitude to the whole event and we were very proud of the 100% effort of every child. Today we read 'The Bad Temepered Ladybird. We quickly discovered that the ladybird was mean and that all the insects and animals he met would not all be found in our garden. To make sure we went on a minibeast hunt. This week we are learning about the life cycle of the ladybird. We are using another Eric Carle book. Some Interesting facts!
1. Ladybirds aren't really bugs at all, they're beetles! 2. The "lady" in ladybird refers to the Virgin Mary. 3. A ladybird's bright colours warn predators to stay away. 4. Over its lifetime, a ladybird may consume as many as 5,000 aphids. 5. You can't tell a ladybird's age by counting its spots! To keep you up to date with a few events over the next couple of weeks. Coming Soon- Friday 24th June Ugly Bug Ball Class Hughes Graduation- 19th July at 9.15am- Invites out shortly. Our topic on minibeast has led the class to a very famous author and illustrator named Eric Carle. Eric Carle Facts Eric Carle, was born on June 25th, 1929 in Syracuse, New York. When he was only six his family returned to Germany, where he was educated as a child and where he later graduated from a local art school. In 1952 Eric returned to the United States, arriving in New York City with a mere $40 in his pocket. He worked as a graphic designer for The New York Times, and as an art director for an advertising agency before being noticed by Bill Martin Jr., an author who asked Eric to work on the book Brown Bear, Brown bear, What Do You See? The book became a best-seller and Eric Carle's career as a children's author/illustrator began. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of Eric's most famous books and this week we have been using it to learn about caterpillars and butterflies. |
