Well done for those in this term’s guitar group who performed in our music 🎶 assembly this morning.

Good use of these Learning Gems:Today saw the fourth poetry recital. In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. Sadly not everyone n this group was able to learn their poems off by heart. Good use of these Learning Gems:This week in science we had two separate lessons. The first was about how the ideas on electricity had changed over time. First, we looked back at the scientists we had learnt about in a previous science lesson, talking about who they were, what they did and also when they made their discoveries/did their research. Afterwards, we created a human timeline and then added a few of the major discoveries in science to it. It was really interesting to see that most of the discoveries didn't happen until the 18th century! For our second lesson this week, we finished our unit on electricity by introducing the new history unit on WW1 and WW2. The children worked in groups to plan a message that they were going to send by Morse code, either using a buzzer (like a telegram) or a bulb (like trench to trench communications). There were some interesting messages sent but the children worked well in their groups to first work out what the Morse code would be for their message and then try it out on a circuit they had made - they even learnt how to make a simple switch to help them perform their Morse code more easily. good use of these learning gems:During their music lesson, the children have been learning about riffs in music. First they noted down the notes they needed to play in their music books, before giving some of the riffs a go on their guitar. I wonder if you can work out what songs they are from? good use of these learning gems:Over the past 2 science lessons we have been carrying out investigations into how to change the brightness of a bulb. The children worked in groups, identifying what they wanted to investigate about changing the brightness of a bulb - most groups looked at how adding batteries into a circuit might change the brightness but 1 group investigated the effect of having different voltage bulbs in a circuit. They then made conclusions based on their results and used the human circuit we had made to try and explain why the brightness of a bulb changed. Good use of these learning gems:This week in maths we have been looking and multiplying and dividing decimals using mental as well as written methods. As the children have such a great understanding of how to use the written methods for multiplication and division, they very quickly understood how to use them when working with decimals and the whole class worked amazingly on the tasks they had today. Great use of these learning gems:We have been working hard on percentages. The children have learnt how to find 10%, 25%, 50% and 1% of a number and then used them to help work out other percentage amounts. Today, we also looked at finding 100% when you knew what a percentage of the whole was. Some children made good use of the bar model to help them understand and work out the answers.
