We started our science lesson with a game of vocabulary Pictionary. The children chose one of the key vocabulary we are using for our light topic and then drew a picture to represent it, their partner then had to guess what the word was. These are just a small selection of the pictures drawn. Today our focus was on mirrors. We talked about how smooth surfaces (like mirrors) reflect light well. Then I set the children a challenge of using mirrors to shine a light on a target that was on the opposite side to the torch. Afterwards, the children showed how they thought the light had travelled from the torch to the bullseye in their books.

We had a fantastic start to our new science topic on light today. We used question spinners to help us come up with questions that we wanted the answers to and I was really impressed with the range of questions and also the depth of them. The children then tried to identify the science enquiry they would have to do in order to answer these questions - most of them we research based, although a few were observation of time and fair testing. We will have some time in our next lessons to try and find the answers to some of them. Following this great start, I then posed the children a true or false statement - Light appears to travel in straight lines. They discussed this with their partner, before carrying out an investigation to prove that it is true! Great use of these learning gems:Good use of the Learning Gems: |
