Today in science, the children had to be electricians solving problems with some broken circuits in the classroom. They were often able to quickly identify the problems i.e. missing batteries, buzzer put in the circuit the wrong way around, broken bulb and then put them right - but they didn't always remember to break it again for the next group! The children then looked at some information about scientists, who were key to developments in electricity and made short videos to explain who they were and what they did.

This afternoon, we went in the hall and played some drama games. We warmed up with fruit salad and zip,zap bong. Then, afterwards, groups of 5 tied themselves in knots with their hands and had to untie without letting go. We finished the afternoon by creating something different with a normal item - a cloth became a unicorn horn, a belt and a wig (amongst other things) and a watering can became a megaphone, a shoe and a telescope! I was really impressed with the children's focus, cooperation and willingness to give every game a go. Great use of these learning gems:We began our new science topic on electricity today. To start with, the children were given a few components and asked to make a circuit - all groups were quickly able to do this and so we began to look at the symbols that are used when drawing circuit diagrams. We talked about the need to draw straight lines for our wires and then they practised drawing circuit diagrams after making circuits including a range of components. Good use of these learning gems:In English we have made a great start to our new creative writing unit. We collected colour adjectives and magical nouns and then drafted and edited our own ‘I can see…’ poems. We finished off by writing them up neatly and drawing an eye 👁️ to display them. It was lovely to see the creative vocabulary choices and imagery everyone came up with, as well as the fantastic art work! Our writing process: collecting ideas, writing first draft, editing work, writing final draft, creating an illustration and then performing! Some of our finished poems:Good use of these Learning Gems:We decided to open our own Art gallery so everyone could come and see our 3D Sculptures. It was lovely to open the doors and invite our parents and families to see our Artwork up close from this term! Great use of these Learning Gems:In guitars we are focusing on reading music and playing acoustic rock songs. Good use of these Learning Gems:In Art we have been exploring the work of the famous sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti, comparing his unique style with that of Henry Moore (who we looked at earlier on in this unit). We then made our own Giacometti style sculptures using garden wire and modroc. Playing with a partner, the children had a set of vocabulary cards which they had to lay down in turn if they could make a connection between their word and the one on the table. Then we talked about the 3 other kingdoms that we hadn't explored in our science lessons - Monera, Protista and fungi. The children found out a little about each of these kingdoms before making their own bacteria, virus or fungi from playdough. They created a 'story' about their model, describing if it was good or bad and its strengths and weaknesses. Good use of these learning gems:Linked to our Geography Unit on South Africa and our History Unit on Nelson Mandela we have been putting our persuasive language skills to the test by planning and creating our own persuasive adverts, encouraging people to visit South Africa. We performed our adverts in front of a green screen and then added background pictures. Some of Our finished Adverts:
Good use of these Learning Gems:Last week, we began to look at the language of ratio. The children went around the class and, looking in each different pot, described the cubes in terms of 'for every.....cube, there are ......cubes'. This week, we began to use the symbol of ratio. The children demonstrated what they understood about the ratio symbol by completing a diving for depth sheet and completed a match up activity. We then looked at how fractions related to ratio, completing a number of different tasks to show it. great use of these learning gems: |
