This afternoon the children worked on making shapes with specific measurements. This was followed up with reminding the children how to create holes in objects. All this led to the children starting to create a pencil holder with very clear specifications!

This morning, we explored a couple of ways we could find multiples of 2-digit numbers in order to help us when needing to divide with 2-digit numbers. It was really interesting to see the children's favourite method for finding the multiples and also to see whether they used this same method when working on short division. Most of the children found the partitioning method easier to work on when it was just finding the multiples but relied on the adding method when needing multiples for division! Great use of these learning gems:Today saw the first five children perform their poems to the rest of the class.
In Mandela Class we are lucky enough to have Mr Harvey work with us to help a different group (each half term) to learn a poem off by heart and recite it to the rest of the class. This is a skill, which is not only part of the Year 6 expectations for reading, but is also a life skill which prepares the children for High School and beyond. It always amazes me how all different types of children respond to the task and the change which occurs in their confidence and ability in just 6 weeks. Well done! To finish our first science topic this year, we created exploding books to show some of the things we had learnt. After some children had completed their exploding books, they got the opportunity to make a battery just like Michael Faraday once did! Good use of these learning gems:We had our first lesson this year on using the written method for short division. We played a 'boxes' game that involved us working out the answer to a calculation using short division and if our partner agreed we were correct we were allowed to draw a line on the game card - if we were the last one to complete the box we got points! Good use of these learning gems:Today, the children returned to the computer room to do some more tinkering on TinkerCAD. This week the focus was on rotating shapes and duplicating them. Once they had mastered both these skills, the children then had to use them in order to design a key ring. Good use of this learning gem:Using our perspective design skills we designed and made our own press prints and created some lovely press print pictures! Firstly we came up with a design and scored our design onto the press print. Then we used our finished press prints, using the designs we scored onto our polystyrene tiles and printing ink to transfer the design onto paper as a repeated pattern. We were able to select from a range of colours and could use black or off white art paper to print on. The different backgrounds and paints gave very different effects - some made our eyes go funny! The best results were when the lines were scored deeply into the tile and the design was kept simple and clear. A great way of using our perspective drawing skills! We enjoyed looking round and finding out more about the Christian Church.
Good use of these Learning Gems:Mandela Class really enjoyed their first visit to the Wild Wood with Mr Childs this year. They had great fun spending the morning completing a range of tasks and having lots of fun! Good use of these Learning Gems: |
